Curiosity vs. Industry Driven Materials Science and Engineering Research
in the US: Papers and Patents

For many industries technological progress is limited only by the
availability of the materials. Most significant advancements in modern
society have been realized with the discovery of new materials which
enabled development of new components, devices and systems. The most
popular example of materials innovation is the discovery of semiconducting
materials which revolutionized the communication and information
technology impacting every aspect of human life.

A general review of materials science and engineering research in the US
will be provided with special emphasis on advanced materials research in
academic institutions. Attributes of fundamental curiosity driven basic
research will be contrasted with mission oriented and/or applied research.
Generally, the curiosity driven research leads to new knowledge (and hence
papers) whereas primary purpose of the mission oriented research is to
generate intellectual property in the form of trade secrets, patents and
products. A brief account of patent processing in the author's academic
institution will be presented to stimulate discussion as to generate ideas
for intellectual property, generation and protection in Turkiye.

MÜFİT AKINÇ (BIOGRAPHY)

Mufit Akinc is professor and chair of Materials Science and Engineering
Department at Iowa State University and Senior Ceramic Engineer at USDOE,
Ames Laboratory. He is elected as vice chair of University Materials
Council to become chair in 2006.
He holds B.Sc. and M.S. degrees in Chemistry from Middle East Technical
University, Ankara Turkey, and Ph.D. degree in Ceramic Engineering from
Iowa State University.
Before joining ISU as faculty in 1981, he was assistant professor at
Middle East Technical University (1979-81) and at Kansas State University
(1977-79). He also served as a liaison scientist at ONR-Europe in London
(1992-93).
Professor Akinc's research interests include synthesis and processing of
ceramic powders and fibers, processing and high temperature properties of
intermetallics, bioinspired hybrid materials, joining of SiC parts with
preceramic polymers. His research has resulted in more than 140 papers and
7 patents. He was appointed three times as a consultant to United Nations
to assist governments of Korea and Turkey. He was also academic Invite
(visiting Professor) at Ecole Polytechnique Federale de Lausanne,
Switzerland in 1996 and 1997. Currently he is a visiting professor at Koc
University.
He is a member of European Academy of Sciences, fellow of the American
Ceramic Society and member of ASM, TMS, the ceramic educational council,
