WHAT IS ERASMUS
The aim of the Erasmus Program is to increase the quality of the Higher Education in Europe, and strengthen the European Dimension in the Higher Education in Europe. Actually, Erasmus is mostly related with the "mobility of university students". Erasmus is a program funded by European Union (EU), established to link universities in the member states of the European Union.
Erasmus is one of the major branches of the EU- Socrates Program that covers undergraduate and graduate studies in universities.
It would be explanatory to quote from the key objectives of the Socrates Program, determined by the Socrates Bureau in Brussels:
• To achieve a significant increase in student and staff mobility between European Higher Education Institutions,
• To promote broad and lasting inter-institutional co-operation,
• To contribute to the concept of a people's Europe,
• To contribute to the economic and social development of Europe through the creation of a significant number of higher education graduates with direct experience of intra- European cooperation.
Who can participate?
To participate in the SOCRATES/ERASMUS program, you must fulfill the following conditions:
- You are a student and enrolled in a formal program of study at higher education level leading to a degree or a diploma (including doctoral level) in one of the participating countries.
- You are a citizen of one the participating countries (or are recognized as having an official status of refugee or stateless person or permanent resident).
- You have completed at least the first year of your university studies.
Student Mobility (SM)
Once a university establishes a bilateral exchange agreement with another university covering interested departments; then the university can use the fund provided for Erasmus activities such as language training of the students, translation of documents, preparatory visits and covering any additional expenses related to student's participation in the program.
The students - except the preparatory school and 1st year students- , including doctorate students, according to the Erasmus agreements and regulations established between the partner universities, can spend their 3-12 months abroad, at the host partner university or higher education institution, via the "Student Mobility" (SM) activity of the Erasmus. In addition to these, via ECTS, the time spent in the host country and the efforts of the student can be recognized by the student's home university.
LIFELONG LEARNING PROGRAMME (LLP)
The new Life Long Learning Programme supports learning opportunities from childhood to old age in every single life situation.
It has a budget of € 7000 millions for the period 2007-2013, and is the successor to the current Socrates, Leonardo da Vinci and eLearning programmes.
Grants and subsidies will be awarded to projects and activities that foster interchange, promote bilateral and multilateral partnerships, foster trans-national mobility of individuals and promote quality in education and training systems throughout Europe.
The programme is built on four pillars, or sub-programmes:
- The Comenius programme for pupils, teachers, schools and related institutions/ organisations (pre-school and school education up to the level of the end of upper secondary education)
- The Erasmus programme for students, scholars, professors, universities and related institutions/organisations (higher education, including trans-national student placements in enterprise)
- The Leonardo da Vinci programme for apprentices, workers, employees and related institutions/organisations (vocational education and training).
The Grundtvig programme for adults, teachers and related institutions/organisations active in the field of adult education.
