COURSE CONTENTS AND OBJECTIVES IN ENGLISH PREP CLASSES
The duration of education in the department of foreign languages is one academic year. After the registration process, a placement test is held to determine the level of students and place them accordingly. What is expected from the students is to understand why this education is given and how they are going to reach the expected level. The education given changes from 20-26 per week, considering the level of students. Each course is a milestone of the following course. The students are obliged to learn every subject. Students use the language so as to understand a speaker or any documents to reply anything orally or in a written form if necessary or to express and even prove their ideas. Though it may not be at a native speaker level you are at least supposed to be able to communicate efficiently. We believe that you will benefit a great deal from this opportunity.
Main Course
Language learning is a multidimensional process. Therefore the more the students are exposed to abundance of stimuli the more the productive this process is. By using the four basic language skills the students are going to learn language structures and vocabulary and how to use them in proper context.
Speaking and Listening
Listening is the basic and the most necessary skill of a language. Therefore the students need a special effort to improve their listening and understanding. It is necessary to expose students as much as possible to various sentence structures and a variety of speeches of the target language from different sources.
Speaking is another important skill which needs to be improved. Speaking is the basic means of communication. It is the main language skill that students want to improve. Thus by using a variety of activities and techniques in this course aims to improve the students listening and speaking skills; to help students gain the necessary strategies to improve and practice these skills. Also through the interaction of students with the instructors other students and materials these skills are aimed to be improved.
Reading
Another important skill in foreign languages is reading and comprehension what the students need to follow related literature in their fields is given in this course. Therefore the students will learn what strategies to use when reading English passages how to comprehend more quickly and easily, how to make associations between texts they read.
Writing
Writing skill will enable the students to Express what they listen and read in their own words. Apart from this another aim of the course is to help students gain some writing styles (for example; formal and informal letters, application letter, CV, descriptive process and argumentative etc.) that they can use in their daily lives; and to express their thoughts and feelings in an organized way.
Computer Assisted Language Learning Labs
Computer Assisted Language Learning Labs are set up to improve the students’ English language skills and for this reason it presents a variety interactive learning materials. The students use these labs in groups or as a self-study to fulfill their needs with the instructors as monitors. In these labs the students can make use of various CD-ROMs, dictionaries and authentic materials that are prepared based on prep school curriculum by the instructors.
In or prep class building there are three computer assisted language learning labs. 25 in each, there are 75 computers in total available for the students.
